Dear Mr Hollywood,
Hey old friend, Remember me? It’s your good pal Mr Originality. You can call me Mr O for short. A long time ago we shared something great. You, me, and some brilliant writers created some classic films. Films that would change lives. Films that would be talked about and watched for YEARS after their debut. Classics. Of course we had our moments where we would put out stuff like “Twins” and “Over the Top” but for every one of those movies we also gave the world a “Ferris Bueller’s day off”, “Wizard of Oz” or “Evil Dead”. We always gave them something to think about rather than recycled junk and THAT is why people loved spending the money to see our films.
The reason I am writing you, old buddy, is because something happened. Somewhere between the Matrix and Spider-Man 1 we got lazy… Well, to be completely fair, you got lazy. I’m not blaming the writers because it’s really not their fault. They are trying to make a living. Why would they risk their careers when they can make a boatload of cash on modernizing something that has already been done. No, it’s not their fault. I’m placing the blame on your executives. Somewhere along the road they decided that it’s easier to make unnecessary sequels or remakes of stuff WE did together YEARS ago. They even have the nerve to try and call them “Reboots”. Can you believe that? All the hard work we put into these original ideas being poorly copied. You left me high and dry to make some money because you thought it was easier and more cost effective to find things that already had a fan base. Comics, Toys, Remakes, and new trilogies have ruled the past 10 years. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing Megan Fox run around in her underwear but there is only so many Michael Bay explosions I can take before I myself combust. Of course I did manage to find some work here and there. I made some things you may have heard like: “The Departed”, “Cloverfield”, “Wall-E”, and most recently “District 9″.
Oh? District 9? It must have went under your radar. Perhaps if your executives stopped staring at Marlon Wayans in some tight CGI suit they may have noticed it. It’s a movie that I am REALLY proud of. Not simply because it’s an original movie… but because it’s a DAMN GOOD original movie. It’s also becoming something of a wake up call to critics and moviegoers alike. Nearly every review being written has been positive and the key word being tossed around is: Original. It’s not a sequel or a remake or based off of some 80′s toy. No…. It’s a fresh idea. It’s the type of movie that makes you think on top of that. It’s got amazing action, great cgi, and some really intense moments. I could review the movie here for you but that’s not why I’m writing you. I’m writing you because people want us back together. People are finally wanting us to go back to the way things were before the Saw 29′s or the Fantastic Four 2′s.
I am willing to forgive you Mr Hollywood. Despite tossing me around I am willing to give you a second chance because history tends to repeat itself. We went through this once in our younger years remember? Back when Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein were big and being constantly redone. Back before we even had color in our movies and everything was exactly the same. We overcame those days by doing one thing. Taking risks. Well this is my request for you. Take the risk and go see District 9. Let this movie shine because it deserves it. It is the type of movie that will change lives and be talked about and watched years after this past weekends debut. Just like the old days…. I promise you will leave the theater wanting more. I promise that once you take this risk you will finally realize the potential we have together.
Your Friend,
Mr Originality
PS) Here is the poster just in case Michael Bay’s explosions temporarily fucked up your memory:
