GOOGLE OPERATING SYSTEM IS OFFICIAL!!

by

So Google went along and finally did it. They announced an operating system. No, not a cell phone Android based OS, but a full fledged operating system similar to the likes of Windows or OSX. Many people knew this was only a matter of time, but I personally don’t know how i feel about the matter.

Google has always been an amazing company. Everything they have been creating in the past years has usually been a success. (My favorite product out of Google to this day is still Gmail). What I respect about Google is that they have their priorities straight when it comes to developing software. Simplicity, innovation, and performance. To me, these three factors are what make or break software, hardware, and now, operating systems.

From the little information that’s been provided so far on Google’s official web blog we can see that the new Chrome OS will be centered around being lightweight and efficient for many types of machines. I feel it’s extremely smart of them to tap into the new “net book” market and that it’s something that Microsoft should of done years ago. (Vista…what a mess.)

The OS itself, is said to mainly focus on integrating the use of web applications to your OS when you’re both online and off. It’s also said that they are going to be using a new type of innovative windowing system. Chrome OS will be based off the Linux kernel and of course become open source and cost a whopping price of… absolutely FREE. They say that they will be using new security architecture that will prevent malware, viruses, and whatnot. Google has also explained that this is a whole separate project from their open source phone OS known as Android.

Google expects to have their OS fully available to consumers by the second half of 2010. What are your feelings about this? Will you run Google Chrome OS on your main machine? We can definitely see a trend of all of the major software companies realizing that in these days, performance is king. Microsoft will have Windows 7, Apple with Snow Leopard, and now Google with the Chrome OS.

A large task Google needs to worry about now, is getting major hardware companies to create working drivers for their Chrome OS, as well as making sure big-name applications such as Adobe Photoshop are compatible off the bat. so far, I’m hearing good things. If all goes well, I can see myself at least installing Chrome OS on one of my laptops. After all, the price is right.
