iPhone Game Review: I <3 Katamari

by

The Katamari series is one of my all time favorite video game series. The creator actually hates video games and wanted to make a game like no other. Back on the Playstation 2 he did just that. Years later his creation is now on the iPhone and iPod Touch in “I <3 Katamari”. This review is a little late seeing as the game came out a several months ago but I feel that this game deserves some more hype.

Review under the cut <3

I <3 Katamari was originally released on the Playstation 2. It was the sequel to the Original Katamari Damacy game that I must have played for hundreds of hours. With that being said I was pretty excited when I heard it was coming out for the iPhone. First off, the thought of motion controls using the iPhones accelerometer. Secondly, IT’S KATAMARI ON MY PHONE.

Let me be the first last to say that it is freaking awesome. I was a little worried when it first came out because it was buggy and the controls were terrible. 3 Days and 1 update later and it is perfect. Well, Perfect as far as the controls go anyway…. It is very simple, tilt a forward to move forward and vice versa. Tilt right and left to turn. There is a button underneath him to do a 180 degree turn as well as tapping the prince multiple times himself to do a dash. All in all it plays very well (thank god for that update).

My issue with the game? It is shorter than Danny Devito.

Danny DeVito

The best way to look at this game is Diet Katamari. It plays the same but it is just so short. Don’t look at this as a full fledged version whatsoever. Even the levels are smaller than their console counterparts. Just remember: This is Katamari for the iPhone. Phone. Not PS2. The iPhone. Get it? Good :D

With that being said, it is still fun as hell. The music is from a bunch of different katamari games and is amazing. The King of all Cosmos of course is in it. You know the deal. If you are a fan of the Katamari series I would suggest dropping the $7.99 for it. Or at least try the free version to see if you like the controls.

Graphically- 7/10- Great for a phone, even if it looks like it is on playstation 1.7

Gameplay- 9/10- Thanks to the update this baby is awesome. Controls are pretty tight.

Sound and Music- 9/10- Sounds like a Katamari game, can you ask for anything better?

Overall- 8/10

Final Thoughts:

Katamari delivers. It is fun as heaven but short as hell. If you are a Katamari fan this is a must buy. If you are a newcomer I would try the demo first and see if ya like it. :D
